Wines are one of the most popular beverages that are served in parties either formal or just a easy get together. Wine tasting can be a great experience especially when you think about how long the wine has been sitting there waiting for someone to appreciate its fine taste.

It doesn’t take much to become proficient at recognizing different types of wines, the smell, the taste are amongst others that you can use. You can get wines that are bitter, sweet, salty and even sour all with different scents and smells.

Here are some of the things that you have to do to be able to be a pro in wine recognition.

After pouring the wine into a glass check out the color by tilting the wine glass away from yourself. Use a white background like a paper towel or even a napkins to really appreciate the color of the wine. Red wine comes in many colors including purple, red brick, ruby and even a maroon color. White wines are known to be colorless, even though some white wines are colored amber, light green and golden yellow.

In order to get a very good impression of a wine’s aroma, try to swirl your wine glass gently which is a way of vaporizing some of the wine’s alcohol content and on the other hand, releasing the drinks aroma. After doing that put the glass just under you node and take a deep breath. You will be make aromas coming from the glass, for instance flowers and berries, oak, citrus and vanilla. Through a wine’s aroma, one can easily identify the drinks uniqueness and quality.

After taking tiny sips of the wine let it site around your tongue, this will give you a true feeling of the wines quality.

Tasting a wine has three stages wherein you need to take namely the attack stage, evolution and finish.

Using your palate is the first attack stage of wine tasting. Using your palate you can determine four things about the wine, the amount of alcohol, the acidity of the drink and the tannin levels, When these four puzzles are combine with one another, they display a distinct crucial sensation right on the palate.

The presentation of the wine inside a persons mouth called the evolution stage and this is what discerns the flavor of the wine. The final part of your wine tasting experience is called the last stage, this is determined by how long the wines flavor stays in your mouth after swallowing.

and give a description of what they are made from?

Tasting wine is the focus of this part of our wine 101 guide…

There are three stages to properly tasting wine: smell; taste; finish. We’ll look at each of those individually.

To smell a wine, you should steadily swirl the glass to throw the wine up onto the side of the glass (thus increasing the surface area of wine in contact with the air) as this causes the wines aromas to be released. To swirl effectively, don’t fill the glass too full - in fact less than half full is recommended. As you’re swirling, place your nose in the glass, inhale, and think about what aromas are coming up from the glass as you do so. Young wines will have primary aromas, relating to the grape variety (such smells are often fruit related). As wines age more secondary aromas develop, which may be more earthy or animalistic. Remember that a wines aromas can take on many different forms, and very rarely will it simply smell of grapes.

When you taste wine, it’s important to realize that little of the flavor that can be sensed actually involves the tongue. In fact, its your nose that does the tasting, even when wine is in your mouth; this is because the aromas of the wine seep into your nasal passages from your mouth. So, breathe in and out through your nose whilst the wine is in your mouth; paying attention to the way the wine changes as you hold it there. Your first impressions on taking the wine into your mouth may be referred to as the fore-palate, which are followed by the mid-palate and the end-palate. Each of these will be different, so look out for the changes in taste.

The finish describes the sensations derived from swallowing the wine. It will often be different to how the wine came across on the palate. You might notice the wines flavors remaining on your palate after you swallow, and this feeling is called length. The more length a wine has, the more time you have to enjoy it, and it’s probably true to say that such wines are generally of better quality.

Pairing wine and food is what we’ll be looking at in this part of our wine 101 guide…

The taste of a wine can improve or worsen depending on the food that you drink it with. There are only a few combinations which really do not work, however, by learning a little you can bring the best out of both the wine and the food.

When pairing food and wine, you can take one of two approaches: pair a wine with a contrasting food taste, like combining a sweeter wine with spicy foods; or use a complementary combination, in which the food and wines share similar characteristics. Either style of pairing will work well; choosing one way over the other is just depends on the type of food being served and your personal preference. Another good way to pair wines with food is to use regional combinations; usually, foods and wines that are produced in the same area will complement one another because they have been made together locally for years.Problem foods include eggs and egg dominated dishes, acidic foods, such as tomatoes or vinaigrette dressings, and spicy foods. {There are no specific rules or recommendations for these, and it’s really a case of hit and miss.} When it comes to such foods, personal experimentation is the only way to find a good wine match.

Here are some examples of wine and food pairings: pair light seafood with light wines, like Sauvignon Blanc or White Port; beef requires heavier red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Burgundy; poultry is usually served with whites unless it has a heavy sauce, in which case lighter reds are perfect; for lamb, try medium-bodied reds like Bordeaux.{However, though these are said to be classic pairings, that doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily like all of them.} Keep in mind that your palate is unique to you, so if you don’t like a combination, don’t use it.It’s worth remembering also that many people have their preferred style of wine and stick to that style regardless of the occasion or the food on offer. Therefore, you should always have different types of wine at hand when you’re entertaining others. Make a suggestion to them, but still give them a choice.

There are thirteen different regions in France with literally thousands of vineyards that produce wine. France is an ideal location for growing grapes for many reasons. The vineyards are very close to the water and the soil conditions are perfect. The climate in France is also idealic for grape growing and therefore makes it one of the best locations in the world for wine.

Wines are usually classified according to the grape varieties they are made from. One grape variety, the Barbera, is often used for red wine. Grown mainly in Piedmont, Italy, this variety is quite adaptable to other regions, and is also grown on a limited scale in the United States. Barbera grapes produce wines with a full-bodied fruity taste as they have a high natural acidity.

Wine enthusiasts know about one variety of grapes that are widely grown in many parts of the world - Cabernet Sauvignon. Grown primarily in Medoc, France, this grape variety has found its way to California, Australia and other wine-making countries. Cabernet Sauvignon wines are considered by wine enthusiasts as among the best red wines in the world. Among the white varieties, the Chardonnay is easily the most popular, producing some of the world’s finest white wines. These French wine varieties are favorites when dining.

French wine varies from the rare varieties, which can be very difficult to find, to the most common types that you can find in wine stores everywhere. If you are looking for one of the rarer varieties of French wine, the Internet is always a good source of information. Rare vintage French wine can be extremely hard to find, but by looking at wine forums and the many different wine websites, you may be successful.

Wine has an international appeal. Every continent on earth has embraced it and sampled it from glass cups ever since they came about. What we should be asking ourselves however is, how come glass? Why not from a mug, plastic cup or wooden goblet? The answer may not exactly be what you expected. You will find in fact a number of different alternative materials used in various countries that wine is drunk from. For example, wooden cups are used in Thailand and in Japan they often drink their wine from a ceramic vase-like cup. However, the overriding choice of tableware drinking vessel, wherever you go, is glass. It’s really more a result of other methods not being appropriate than glass being that special in any way. Lets examine what else is on offer.

Wood. Wine is indeed drunk from wooden vessels as highlighted previously, although it doesn’t come without some big downsides. First off, the wood often gets stained in you choose to drink red wine from it. Even if it is very hard wood, discolouring will occur. further more, rotting can often take place in the wood if it has liquid on it for a while. So it would have to be dried out thoroughly after every use.

Metal. If you have ever drunk wine from a metal cup you will know it’s not the best experience ever. something called ‘displacement’ takes place with lots of wines as a result of the high ion count in most metals. This means that when the wine comes into contact with the metal it absorbs a number of the ions and effects the flavour. This is why you often pick up metallic notes when drink from this type of cup. Also, because of its very heat-conductive qualities, almost any other material would keep the wine cooler when you’re holding it

Ceramic.  Like glass, ceramic is non porous, does not release any of its qualities into the wine, and can be easily cleaned with a glass cloth. This is why lots of people do use ceramic, although there will never be as many people as use glass because, very simply, you cannot see what is in the vessel. Part of the joy of drinking a nice wine is swirling it around the glass examining its colours and textures. The desire is a very instinctive one and something that has been around since the development of glass.
