Wines are one of the most popular beverages that are served in parties either formal or just a easy get together. Wine tasting can be a great experience especially when you think about how long the wine has been sitting there waiting for someone to appreciate its fine taste.

It doesn’t take much to become proficient at recognizing different types of wines, the smell, the taste are amongst others that you can use. You can get wines that are bitter, sweet, salty and even sour all with different scents and smells.

Here are some of the things that you have to do to be able to be a pro in wine recognition.

After pouring the wine into a glass check out the color by tilting the wine glass away from yourself. Use a white background like a paper towel or even a napkins to really appreciate the color of the wine. Red wine comes in many colors including purple, red brick, ruby and even a maroon color. White wines are known to be colorless, even though some white wines are colored amber, light green and golden yellow.

One of the most important factors when tasting wine is your smell, this will determine if your taste buds will like. In order to get a very good impression of a wine’s aroma, try to swirl your wine glass gently which is a way of vaporizing some of the wine’s alcohol content and on the other hand, releasing the drinks aroma. After doing that put the glass just under you node and take a deep breath. You will be make aromas coming from the glass, for instance flowers and berries, oak, citrus and vanilla. Through a wine’s aroma, one can easily identify the drinks uniqueness and quality.

After taking tiny sips of the wine let it site around your tongue, this will give you a true feeling of the wines quality.

Tasting a wine has three stages wherein you need to take namely the attack stage, evolution and finish.

Using your palate is the first attack stage of wine tasting. Using your palate you can determine four things about the wine, the amount of alcohol, the acidity of the drink and the tannin levels, When these four puzzles are combine with one another, they display a distinct crucial sensation right on the palate.

The presentation of the wine inside a persons mouth called the evolution stage and this is what discerns the flavor of the wine. The final part of your wine tasting experience is called the last stage, this is determined by how long the wines flavor stays in your mouth after swallowing.

Like a good book, a good banquet is so much more than a meal for a crowd. The planning and execution is a task for the master idea-maker. Pulling it all off requires a cast and crew rivaling the filmmakers of Hollywood in size and skill. Timing is everything – one person off their cue and the soup gets cold, the centerpieces melt, and the whole show comes crashing down. It is an art with a hundred variations.

What scale of a production are you looking to make? If you’re given creative freedom, you might be looking for that one idea for a theme or attitude from which the unfolding of your entire scheme can emerge. Herein, some ideas for inspiration:

The Medieval Renaissance Banquet
Renaissance Faires are becoming an annual event in every major city, usually around the Fall. Groups like the Society for Creative Anachronism organize on the Internet and travel around in a circuit. The popular restaurant and entertainment chain Medieval Times has also helped establish the Middle Ages theme as a popular banquet genre.

For Medieval banquets, the food is usually simple and heavily features roast meat. If you serve alcohol, mead is a popular Renaissance-era beverage, but finding somebody who knows how to make it is difficult. Other Renaissance alcohol might include ales, malt beverages, and grog or rum. Side dishes may be simple steamed vegetable or potato dishes. Breads and soups go well together, and a bread soup-bowl – that is, a large crusty loaf hollowed out and served that way, like soup in an edible bowl – actually had it’s origins in the Renaissance. Other foods include tarts and cakes, and cheeses and wines.

While there is a myth that Medieval folks ate roasts with their bare hands straight off the bone, actually times for the better-off of the period – the ones who could actually manage banquets! – were more civilized and utensils are encouraged. You might think about wooden serving tools, costuming the staff in European Middle-Age garb, and referring to the servers as “serving wenches and rogues”. Attend a Renaissance Faire in your area to get a feel for it; these are great fun and a cultural expedition.

The Elegant Oriental Banquet
Here’s an opportunity to put your sushi or teppanyaki chef to good use! Steak and seafood restaurants with an oriental theme have made their mark on the culinary world, notably the popular Benihana restaurant chain. The steak and grill house style of Japanese restaurant is only one way to look at it, however, and you may consider something a little more formal than having a cook at each table flicking steak knives and flaming pans around inches from your guest’s noses.

A formal Oriental occasion is more relaxed and refined. Think more of geisha servers, elegant centerpieces, and delicate foods. This is an occasion which calls for a tea serving. Start with a basic sado ceremony and alter it for your needs. Perhaps replace tea with a choice of hot beverages before the meal. Keep a menu that is consistent with the whole event, sticking to Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, whatever you pick.

The whole event can be kept to an Oriental style of refinement when you keep the spirit of “wabi”. Wabi means “quiet or sober refinement, or subdued taste” and is characterized by humility, restraint, simplicity, naturalism, profundity, and a kind of humbling slight imperfection.

The Technology Company Banquet
The computer and electronics industry continues to grow at a fierce pace. More and more you’ll find yourself catering company events for a computer-related enterprise. In these cases, management is like management everywhere, but the workers are something else. The theme isn’t so much a matter here as the kind of food.

Technology workers such as engineers and programmers tend to be high-minded in their food preferences. The stereotype of the computer geek snacking on junk food is absolutely false. All computer types are at least discriminating in their diet and many are highly health-food conscious. Many prefer spicy ethnic food, and on their own organize group expeditions to the most exotic restaurant in town. The only place where the stereotype is on track is caffeine; IT people still love their coffee and energy drinks. Setting up a quality espresso bar is sure to be a big hit.

Theming is something you should discuss before-hand. Find out if there is a strong company subculture you can cater to. A science fiction show popular to the group, perhaps. In any case, theming will be largely a matter of decoration rather than menu. The only general constraint is that most technology workers are urban and like some sophistication in their settings.

The Western Banquet
A “no-brainer” for the American culture. Western themed restaurants aren’t hard to come by. Ranch fare is hardy and simple to prepare and is served without too much trimmings. Barbecue, chilis, ribs, cornbread and corn dishes, roast beef, roast turkey, and just about anything you can put gravy on will fit in. Desserts such as cherry pie and apple cobbler.

Beverages may be either of coffee or sarsaparilla (root beer). Don’t go overboard on the theming but keep it stylish. The key is not to decorate with cliches like cattle skulls, wagon wheels and hay bales, but to keep an atmosphere of the typical classy ranch house with a western flare.

The Christian Banquet
A Biblical theme is an interesting experience. You may get a call for this whenever you have a church wedding, a religious social event, or a business with a heavy faith accent. Be sure to find out ahead of time whether they have dietary constraints such as a class of meats they don’t eat or Kosher restrictions.

Fish, poultry, and lamb will be a safe choice for meats. Salads are popular, as is any raw or steamed vegetable. Bread is also a big part of Biblical fare, particularly whole grain breads with a lot of wheat and barley. Fruits can be dates, figs, pomegranates, or grapes. Beverages should be fruit juices, which are pretty much the only safe choice with all of the religious restrictions on alcohol and hot drinks out there.

Hope these ideas got your creative juices flowing!

I recently got into wine, and I love it. I must admit, however, that when it comes to choosing wine in a restaurant, I have no clue what I am asking for, so I just go with my instinct…Does anyone have any tips/suggestions, on what to look for when choosing wine?

Also, what are the difference in types of wine?

Rather than looking at several wines, try starting with the popular local wines. For US, there are two whites and three reds you should be comfortable with.
Whites:
1) Sauvignon Blanc. Typically inexpensive, SB tends to be grassy, a bit fruity, and very tart. It is an excellent food wine.
2) Chardonnay. This is hugely popular, but waning a bit. However, it's a great benchmark given it's huge popularity. US versions tend to be very oaky (astringent) and buttery. I'm not a fan with food, but can be good in the right situations.
Reds:
1) Pinot Noir. Tends to be light, fruity, and acidic (at least in the US). Good and versatile food wine. Think dark fish like Tuna/Salmon or white meats like chicken/pork.
2) Merlot. Medium bodied and when done right, very well balanced. Has been getting a bad rap in US because there's a lot of questionable merlot in the marketplace, but can be very good.
3) Cabernet Sauvignon. Heavier and rich. Works well with steaks, etc.

Obviously, the world of wine is much more than these, but this is enough for beginners. Also, get some books and read up on it, like Wine for Dummies.

And lastly, if you're not comfortable with a wine list, ask your server. Someone in the restaurant should be able to guide you to a good choice.
3) Cab

Parties are fun times and no party is complete without arrangements for special food to be served. It is the gourmet food fare offered at parties that takes our hearts away. Caviar can be a suitable delicacy to be served at parties. This is principally consumed as a garnish or as a spread. Serving of caviar on lightly toasted bread or crackers along with butter is acclaimed as a fine hors d’oeuvre. It is also common to find caviar being served with beverages like champagne or vodka. The caviar may be obtained from various fish species- the most commonly used fish species being the sturgeon.

Delicacy caviar obtained from various fish species

It is the eggs or roe obtained from the female sturgeon, a primitive fish species of the Northern Hemisphere that usually constitute caviar. These fishes are found in coastal waters, rivers and lakes. It is from the inland Caspian Sea- lying between Russia and Iran that most of the world’s caviar supplies is procured.

Among the sturgeon species it is the beluga sturgeon that produces the beluga caviar and the Russian sturgeon that produces the osetra caviar. Again, the stellate sturgeon produces the sevruga caviar. All these are varieties of fine caviar. The American paddlefish caviar- roe of a special fresh water sturgeon comes in many shades and ranges from pale grey to dark steel and has a smooth and silky texture and rich, complex flavor.

The Royal Osetra caviar is low-salt caviar obtained from the sturgeon fished in the Caspian Sea- Russian waters. The characteristic dark and rich color and incredible flavor and subtle sweetness make it so very special. Featuring among the rarest and the most magnificent of all caviar is the Tzar Imperial Beluga. This is near-translucent pale grey caviar. The large perfect pearls and delicate buttery flavor makes this stand apart.

Serving caviar secured from around the world

Caviar as secured from the world over is a highly esteemed delicacy. How best to serve it is the issue which concerns hosts offering the delicacy the most. The fine caviar obtained from various parts of the world and from various species of fishes are to be desirably served on lightly toasted bread or crackers together with butter. The bread or crackers are not to be made too hard by toasting in order to avoid losing of the taste. Utensils made of horn, wood or gold are traditionally considered as the best utensils to serve the caviar on. Mother-of-pearl and plastic utensils may also be suitable. However, utensils made of silver and steel- both carbon and stainless types need to be avoided as they have been known to alter taste and color of caviar.

Cavemen weren’t always barbaric in their daily lives, between gathering food and knocking one and other over with big sticks they utilized the outdoor oven known as at barbeque pit. Our cave brothers knew what they were doing when they smoked turkey and chickens over the hot coals of the pit, they were unknowingly crafting a cooking method still utilized today. The barbeque pit is a great way to cook food, gather with friends, and create some spice to that boring yard of yours.

Barbeque pits are traditionally used by restaurants, cooking enthusiasts, and outdoorsmen, but they are becoming more popular in our backyards. The location of the barbeque pit is the first essential ingredient to making this outdoor oven work for you and your family. I wouldn’t recommend putting the barbeque pit in your front yard if you live on a busy street, the next door neighbors might think you’re trying to send smoke signals to the sky for rescue. Then again if you live on a farm, or ranch, a front yard barbeque pit might be just what the doctor ordered. The most logical way to pick a location for the barbeque pit is away from leaves, trees, and anything that can catch on fire. That being said it can also be a trendy looking landmark if you put it in the center of your backyard, as long as the pit won’t cause anything near it to catch fire.

Once you have selected the perfect location for your barbeque pit, it’s time to start digging. Typically you would want to dig about 5 feet into the ground, and create a circle big enough to house whatever size metal grill you will be topping your pit off with. Once the hole is dug you want to line it with wood, or charcoals of your choice. Be sure to choose the correct wood or coals because this is what will generate that smoked flavor. Many wood fanatics go for hickory or oak woods to burn in their pits, while charcoal is usually basic grocery bought coals.

You don’t need a toga and a wooden club to be able to cook on your new barbeque pit. Many get the idea that Neanderthal ovens are meant for Neanderthal foods, this is not the case. Feel free to toss on some vegan burgers, or exotic tilapia fish. Whatever is your delight will be cooked to perfection on your in ground barbeque pit.

The final step is making the pit a family friendly by adding wooden stools in a circular fashion a few feet back from the pit. This will take roasting marshmallows to the next level.

A farmstay can be an enjoyable experience for kids and adults alike. Depending on the nature of farms, some specialize in rearing sheep and chickens, while others have cattle, horses, calves and goats. A farmstay provides an abundance of learning activities and memorable hands-on opportunities.

Things to Do at the Farm

You stay can include :

1. Feeding and caring for animals

2. Learning about breeding horses

3. Planting and harvesting organic vegetables

4. Gathering the horses

5. Milking the cows and collecting eggs

6. Feeding out the hay

7. Riding on a tractor

8. Shifting stock

9. Watching sheep dogs at work

10. Learning about haymaking and sheep shearing

11. Making country wines and jam from wild berries

12. Making wild craft from berries, teas, mushrooms, dyes

Other Activities at the Farm

Besides enjoying activities at the farm, your hosts may offer a drive around the farm with a visit to view the animals reared. Your host may also bring you for a farm walk. Some hosts are likely to organize sidetrips for you, guided tours or other fun activities such as scuba diving, trekking, forest walks etc. There are also hosts who are keen to conduct workshops on fun with wool or other simple crafts with materials gathered around the farm.

Accommodation

Depending on the farm, you may be entitled to fully self-contained cottages where you can cook your own meals, while others include a hearty farm breakfast for you. Some farmstays allow you pitch your own tents and have a camping experience. You may wish to find out the facilities and amenities available at the farm. Different rooms may have different bed configurations. Not all rooms come with ensuite facilities; you may have to share the bathroom with other guests. Usually, your hosts will have a check-in time. They may not be able to accommodate early arrivals as they may have to spend the day preparing for your stay. Farmstays do have their own cancellation policy; some require 14 days notice.

Things to Bring

You should pack your shoes and clothes according to the activities of the farm such as bushwalking, horse riding. You may wish to bring along your sunblock, insect repellent, camera, hat and sunglasses.

Things to Note

1. As many of the farms are located in the mountain regions away from the city, it is best to find out how you can get there. Find out from the hosts if they can offer you a pick up or drop off service.

2. You may wish to note if there are any restrictions on pets.

3. Not all farmstays are suitable for children. Do find out their child policy.

4. Take note of the types of animals reared at the farm if your kids are likely to be sensitive to some animals.

5. Find out if there are special activities for the kids.

6. Some farmstays do offer long stay or child discounts.

7. Don’t forget to bring a little gift to thank your hosts for their warm and kind hospitality.

Have a blessed and wonderful vacation.

Caviar’s role as the premier delicacy of kings, emperors, and other heads of state stretches all the way back to the Persian Empire and the “Cake of Power” days of the delectable Sturgeon Roe. It’s hard to come by, even harder to pay for, and what many people might not realize, hard to prepare and serve.

The most important thing to remember is that when you buy caviar, you have a limited window to use it. Fresh caviar is good for at most four weeks. Though, if you decide to purchase pasteurized product, you’ll be safe for a while longer. After opening though, you’ll want to use your caviar as quickly as possible, within a couple days at most.
In terms of taste, caviar is a very fickle food. It’s incredibly tasteful, evoking every response in the various arenas of your tongue. However, you’ll want to make sure that when you serve it to guests, you don’t disrupt that taste by drowning it out.

The best way to serve your caviar is to leave it in the tin, surrounding it with ice. If you try to take it out and pretty it up, you risk breaking the grain and losing the flavors before it even reaches your mouth. Secondly, you want to make sure whatever you serve it with doesn’t offset its flavors.

As an hors d’oeuvre it is best served on lightly toasted bread or crackers, usually with butter. You don’t want the bread or cracker to be too hard or you will risk losing flavor once more. There is a common misconception that serving caviar with eggs or other strong tastes like sour cream or yogurt is a good choice, but more often than not you only succeed in completely drowning out the taste of your caviar in doing so.

In terms of beverage, there are a few different opinions on the matter. Firstly, there is the classical choice of Champagne with your caviar. Many find it to be too sweet though, once again taking away from the taste of the caviar, but the tradition is old and so too is the draw of that tradition. Vodka is another traditional pairing, cleaning your palate each time to taste in full the various flavors.

Caviar is a delicacy of the highest order, and accordingly it’s foreseeable to be confused or even nervous about how best to serve it. There are many aspects to take into consideration; its freshness, its palatability, the after taste, and how strong other flavors come across. Keep all of these in mind when serving to get the most and the best out of your caviar.
